New York, NY—The International Center of Photography (ICP) announced the recipients of the 40th ICP Infinity Awards. Moreover, ICP will present the awards to five talented women on April 10, 2024, at the Shed in New York City. ICP is a leading museum and school dedicated to photography and visual culture.
Further, the event recognizes four talented photographers who have expanded the boundaries of the medium as well as a philanthropist who has annually supported the field. The recipients are Lynsey Addario, Renell Medrano, Shirin Neshat, Wendy Red Star and Caryl S. Englander.
In addition, the annual awards event will occur during ICP’s 50th anniversary year, celebrating a legacy in photographic excellence. The event is ICP’s largest fundraiser and benefits its full range of education and exhibition programs.
“The 40th Annual Infinity Awards demonstrate and celebrate ICP’s powerful and lasting commitment to photography,” said David E. Little, executive director of ICP. “For five decades, ICP has showcased both the artists and the leaders who have contributed to the medium’s essential role in visual culture. We are enormously proud to honor these five remarkable women whose artistry, imagination, wit and bravery have led to their memorable and transformative contributions.”

Caryl S. Englande
Englande is an accomplished documentary and portrait photographer. She has also served as chair of the International Center of Photography since 2008, having joined the board a decade earlier. Her leadership has guided ICP through a period of tremendous growth and international recognition. Among her many contributions to the success of the institution is securing ICP’s new location on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, housing the school and museum in one integrated space.
In recognition of this accomplishment, the structure was named The Caryl S. Englander Building. A graduate of the ICP/NYU Master’s program, Englander’s photographs have formed the core of several exhibitions. They include “Acts of Charity, Deeds of Kindness” for the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty in 2005 and “Through the Lens of Faith,” installed at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in 2019 in collaboration with the Studio Libeskind. In addition, she has served on ICP’s Exhibitions, Acquisitions, and Education Committee. What’s more, she is a fierce advocate for their programming and community engagement.
Shirin Neshat
An Iranian-born artist and filmmaker living in New York, Neshat works and experiments with the mediums of photography, video and film. She imbues them with highly poetic and politically charged images and narratives that question issues of power, religion, race, gender and the relationship between the past and present, East and West, individual and collective through the lens of her personal experience as an Iranian woman living in exile.
Lynsey Addario
An American photojournalist, Addario has covered conflict, humanitarian crises as well as women’s issues around the Middle East and Africa. She did so on assignment for the New York Times and National Geographic for more than two decades. Moreover, since September 11, 2001, Addario has covered conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Lebanon, Darfur, South Sudan, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Yemen, Syria and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Wendy Red Star
Living and working in Portland, Oregon, Red Star has exhibited in the United States and abroad. Venues have included the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, NY), Brooklyn Museum (Brooklyn, NY), both of which have her works in their permanent collections. She’s also exhibited in the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain (Paris, France); Domaine de Kerguéhennec (Bignan, France); Portland Art Museum (Portland, Oregon); Hood Art Museum (Hanover, New Hampshire); St. Louis Art Museum (St. Louis, Missouri); Minneapolis Institute of Art (Minneapolis, Minnesota); as well as the Frost Art Museum (Miami, Florida).
Renell Medrano
Medrano is a Dominican-American photographer and director from the Bronx, New York. Her work focuses on finding vulnerability in her subjects, drawing inspiration from New York City and her motherland of the Dominican Republic. She graduated from Parsons School of Design | The New School with a degree in Photography.
Infinity Award Selection and Nominating Committees
The 2024 Lifetime Achievement and Trustees Infinity Awards were selected by ICP to acknowledge major achievements in photography and philanthropy. They also honor Cornell Capa, who founded ICP in 1974 to preserve the legacy of “concerned photography”—the creation of socially and politically minded images that have the potential to educate and change the world.
Furthermore, the 2024 Infinity Awards in Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism, Contemporary Photography and New Media and Commercial and Editorial Photography were selected by both nominating committees and specialized selection committees representing 50+ leading voices in the field of photography.

International Center of Photography
Through exhibitions, education programs, community outreach as well as public programs, ICP offers an open forum for dialogue about the power of the image. Since its inception, it has presented more than 700 exhibitions, provided thousands of classes and hosted public programs.
ICP launched its new integrated center on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in January 2020. Located at 79 Essex Street, ICP is the cultural anchor of Essex Crossing, one of the most expansive mixed-use developments in New York City.
