Los Angeles, CA—DJI is touting its new DJI Avata 2 drone as offering “an all thrills, no frills experience.” DJI designed the acrobatic drone to give users a safer, more immersive FPV flight experience. It also features an upgraded sensor to improve image quality and increased flight time. Further, the DJI Avata 2 is meant for pairing with the new DJI Goggles 3 and DJI RC Motion 3.

“Just under two years ago, we helped people embrace and explore the almost out-of-body experience of FPV flight,” said Ferdinand Wolf, creative director at DJI. “DJI Avata 2 builds on this by offering everyone the chance to fly like a pro with easy flips, rolls and drifts.”

DJI Googles 3

For pairing with the Avata 2, the DJI Goggles 3 has adjustable diopters as well as two micro-OLED screens that support the 10-bit enhanced display. It also has an up-to-100Hz refresh rate and ultralow-latency transmission. The goggles also feature binocular cameras that present the surrounding environment, which can be superimposed with the live feed from the aircraft. Thus, pilots are given situational awareness without needing to remove the goggles. This real-view PiP (Picture-In-Picture) technology is meant to enhance both the immersive experience and safety.

DJI RC Motion 3

By combining the Avata 2 with the DJI RC Motion 3, new pilots are given the ability to flip, drift and roll and perform difficult aerial acrobatics with the drone. Whether soaring, diving or rolling, footage is captured with a push on the RC Motion 3 joystick.

For example, One-Push Flip add twists to the footage with 360º front/back flips. One-Push Roll takes shots some 360º left/right roll. Finally, One-Push 180º Drift can achieve dramatic visual effects with high-speed lateral drifts spinning 180° past objects and pulling swiftly away.

DJI Avata 2 Key Features

With a bigger image sensor than its predecessor, the Avata 2’s 1/1.3-inch CMOS superwide-angle 12MP camera expands the available dynamic range. It also handles low-light conditions better. Further, its ultrawide-angle lens has a viewing angle of up to 155° to enable unique perspectives and tight shots. In addition, the camera provides immersive aerial photography and HDR videography at up to 4K/60 frames per sec, as well as slow-motion footage at 2.7K/120 fps. What’s more the drone’s 10-bit D-Log M Color mode enables richer details in highlights and shadows, which users can bring out in postproduction and streamline color grading.

For sharper video even during aerial maneuvers, the Avata 2 uses a stabilization algorithm and two DJI flagship stabilization technologies. DJI RockSteady eliminates overall picture shake even while flying at high speeds or in windy conditions.  DJI HorizonSteady helps ensure the captured footage remains locked on the horizon even if the drone turns sharply or sways dramatically. Furthermore, when the EIS setting is off, the Avata 2 supports Gyroflow, so you can further stabilize footage in postproduction.

In addition, the Avata 2’s updated integrated propeller guard is lighter. Thus, it permits more agile, freer navigation in tight spaces. Users also can handle unexpected situations with just one press of the RC Motion 3 lock button, which brings the drone to a halt. Plus, the drone automatically initiates the Return to Home (RTH) function when its battery is low or in case of signal loss.

Another feature is that users can perform low-altitude or indoor flights via new binocular fisheye sensors for enhanced stability and safety. Further, in the event you land the drone on its back, you can get airborne by using Turtle mode. This mode can automatically flip the drone back into takeoff position when upside down.

More Features

The Avata 2 has a maximum flight time of 23 minutes and supports PD fast charging. Furthermore, a new two-way charging hub provides a power accumulation function. As a result, it allows the transfer of remaining power from multiple batteries to the one with the highest charge level, supplying an “extra battery.”

Also, new O4 video transmission offers up to 8 miles of video transmission distance. It also features a transmission latency as low as 24 ms; 1080p/100 fps high-definition image quality; and a transmission bitrate of 60Mbps. Its two-transmitter, four-receiver, four-antenna design also offers anti-interference performance.

Additionally, the DJI Goggles 3 live feed from the Avata 2 is viewable on the DJI Fly app. You can also transmit it to another device nearly 10 feet away. You can also use a cable to share the feed to a display or different Goggles 3 headsets in audience mode. Another nicety is 46GB of internal storage, capable of storing 90 minutes of 1080p/60fps video. And there is Wi-Fi connectivity for fast file transfer to smartphones.
