Melville, NY—Canon USA introduced a full-frame, ultrawide-angle L-series lens. The new Canon RF10-20mm F4 L IS STM lens is aimed at both professional photographers and serious enthusiasts.

“Opening the door to supreme full-frame visual possibilities, the RF10–20mm f/4 L IS STM lens continues Canon’s respected reputation for optical excellence associated with L-series lenses,” the company announced.

Canon is positioning the new ultrawide-angle lens as a solution for landscape, cityscape, architectural, real estate and wedding photography as well as videography.

Canon RF10-20mm F4 L IS STM Features

This new addition enhances optical performance with a mirrorless lens design that incorporates key features like improved image stabilization. New IS technology helps minimize wide-angle “fluttering” at the outer areas of the image frame. Additionally, it achieves up to 5 stops of shake correction and up to 6 stops of coordinated IS when paired with EOS R cameras featuring an in-body image stabilizer (IBIS).

The lens also uses a quiet leadscrew-type STM (stepping motor) focus drive motor to augment its video performance. Moreover, this marks the first time this technology appears in a premium Canon L-series lens.

The lens’s 16-element, 12-group construction consists of one super UD (ultralow dispersion) lens, three UD lenses as well as three aspheric lenses. Together they work to combat aberrations to produce sharp, clear images. Canon also applied its subwavelength structure coating (SWC) and Air Sphere coating (ASC) to reduce flare and ghosting.

Furthermore, with the professional video and still visual storyteller in mind, the RF10–20mm F4 L IS STM has a built-in lens hood and a lens function button on the barrel for customizing functions. They include AF settings, prerecording as well as Zebras. Additionally, the lens has a 16–32mm-equivalent range when used on EOS R APS-C-format cameras.

Additional Features

Other features include a 9-bladed aperture; a programmable control ring; a rear slot for precut gel filters; a petal-type hood integrated into the lens barrel; and a minimum focus distance of just under 10 inches at all focal lengths.

The front lens element is also coated in fluorine for added durability and to facilitate easy cleaning. What’s more, for outdoor use, the lens has the same dust and water resistance found on all L-series lenses. There are seals around the control ring, focus ring, zoom ring, operation panel as well as mount.

For portability, the lens measures 3.3×4.4 inches and weighs in at 1.25 pounds. Notably, this is half the weight of the EF series 11–24mm f/4 L lens. The Canon RF10–20mm f/4 L IS STM lens is available for preorder and will ship in November. It has an estimated retail price of $2,299.
