Melville, NY—A high-power super-zoom lens for Nikon Z full-frame (FX-format) mirrorless cameras, the Nikon Nikkor Z 28-400mm F4-8 VR is a new option for travel, sports and wildlife photography. Moreover, Nikon says at launch, it boasts the highest zoom ratio in its class (among full-frame zooms with 10x ratio).

“So many photographers and creatives will love the versatility of the Nikkor Z 28–400mm, which gives you clarity range as well as fantastic backgrounds,” said Naoki Onozato, president and CEO, Nikon Inc. “Wherever your travels lead, this is definitely a lens to consider packing.”

Nikon Nikkor Z 28-400mm F4-8 VR Specs

The all-in-one Z 28–400mm f/4–8 VR is a high-magnification zoom lens that covers a broad range of focal lengths—from 28mm to 400mm. Consequently, whether shooting up close or far away, photographers will benefit from its 14.2× zoom capability. Although it is a super-telephoto zoom lens, it’s also among the lightest in its class, weighing 1.6 pounds. Additionally, it is 3.4 inches in diameter and 5.6 inches in length.

In addition, the new lens has a close minimum focus distance of 7.8 inches at the maximum wide-angle position and 3.9 feet at the maximum telephoto position. Further, its maximum 0.35x reproduction ratio lets you capture close-ups at short distances of food, flowers and animals, for example. When shooting far away, you can also fill the frame with your subject and still have a creatively blurred background.

The lens’s optical design features 21 elements in 15 groups. The elements include four extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements to combat various aberrations and create sharp images. It also uses an inner-focus design and a 9-blade rounded diaphragm to augment bokeh.

What’s more, the lens uses a stepping motor (STM) to enable fast, quiet autofocusing, even with moving subjects. It also features a vibration-reduction (VR) image stabilization function. The system achieves 5.0 stops of correction against shake effects for more steady handheld shooting. Furthermore, when you pair the lens with a compatible camera, you can activate synchro VR for up to 5.5-stop stabilization. Synchro VR combines in-camera VR and lens VR.

Another feature is support for a linear MF (manual focus) drive to permit smooth focusing, which is especially useful for video shooting. Nikon also designed the lens as dust- and drip-resistant. It has seals on various portions, including movable parts of the lens barrel. Finally, the lens comes with a compact, square lens hood.

The Nikkor Z 28–400mm f/4–8 VR lens will reach retail in mid-April. It has a suggested retail price of $1,299.95.
